50mm Lens Meetup

Saturday 11 July
Loring - 10am - 2.0 Hours
Tom Archibald
The 50mm lens is one of the most flexible and useful lenses in any photographer's gear bag. It is neither a wide-angle nor a telephoto lens, but allows the camera to see on the same scale as your eye. As such, it can be used for a variety of styles, from landscape and street photography to portrait and product photography. In this meetup, we'll review the basic camera settings. We'll then cover some of the advantages of shooting with a prime lens, and some basic techniques to using the 50mm lens. Tom was very articulate in explaining the details. He shared practical life examples from his own experiences and was kind to deviate from his structured materials to take on questions from the group. I would recommend any interested to surely join the training/workshop.

Great class and a fantastic group of people in attendance. I have been to other classes before with wide stretches of experience and a collection of pretentiousness and ego on the more experienced end. That was not the case.

Tom is friendly and has a lot of experience, but honestly the best part of the class is gathering a bunch of photo nerds, setting them off to work, and letting them look over each others' shoulders.

Very friendly environment. Good group of ppl attending. Content more geared to beginner and advanced beginner. Directions said bring camera and empty card for lots of pictures. Many attendees brought high end equipment leading me to believe they were quite advanced. Disappointed we never got our cameras out. It was all lecture - which is fine - just need to be up front in the class description. Overall an enjoyable time with good people.

Tom did a great job giving info at the beginning and was good about answering questions that came up during the session. It was great to get together and shoot with other photographers with carried interests and styles.

I enjoyed the opportunity to get out with other photographers to capture the colors. I was concerned that the date was a little late for colors, but I needn't have worried. I had no idea there was such a great park right in the city! I'm not super confident in my photography, and the instructor was approachable for comments and suggestions. I'm looking forward to attending another class in the future!

Title or Location: Abraham Lake, Alberta Canada
Abraham Lake in Alberta Canada is known for its unique winter phenomena where millions of methane bubbles from decaying matter below become trapped in layers of crystal-clear ice creating a stunning, bubbly turquoise surface. The temps were around 15? F which were bearable, but throw in a 15mph wind then it becomes brutal! Had it not been for my ice cleats keeping me firmly in place, getting this shot would have been extremely difficult!Nikon D850, f-13, 1/2 second, exposure ISO 125, 16mm-35

A spectacular Summer night in Downtown Minneapolis. I was on location for a model shoot and as the session was wrapping up I decided to cross the street to find this spectacular view of the Minneapolis Skyline. It was beginning to storm so I changed my camera settings in hopes of catching some lightning. It took a while, but I finally captured what I wanted.

This image is a Still Life Composition of "Berries, Wine and Grapes" that I created on a rainy day in my bedroom. I used no fancy Studio Lighting at all. My only light source was a hand-held flashlight that I kept moving rapidly. It was an experiment in Light Painting when I couldn't go outside to shoot.
